Is Ajax Licensing Upon Us?

Yesterday, February 27th, I noticed this article at Information Week: Patent Threatens Rich-Media Apps With License Fees. Some obscure chop shop out of San Francisco obtained a patent that “covers all rich-media technology implementations, including those that employ tools such as Flash, Flex, Java, Ajax, and XAML, when the rich-media application is accessed by any device over the Internet.”

I don’t know why the US patent law is so crippled. If this isn’t bizarre, I don’t know what is. The funny thing is the “patent” was issued on Valentine’s day. I guess nobody loves this idiot who staked his claim to infamy (surprise!). Those who grab patents, sit on them, produce nothing and sue everyone are the most worthless people. Believe me, I know a thing or two about worthless people: our previous company was acquired (and ruined) by Forgent.

Will we live to see the season finale of this soap opera?

Whenever a company shifts it's core focus to legal action, you know something is terribly wrong.

How is it possible to patent "Ajax"? It's just a specific use of a couple technologies; soon, we'll be hearing of people patenting the HTML strong tag or tables.
