I Love Holidays!

Some four centuries ago a group of people sailed from Plymouth, England, to the New World. The first winter nearly half of the 102 settlers died from cold and hunger. Local Indians taught them how to cultivate corns and grow native vegetables so they could survive from that point on. To remember their tribulations we hold Thanksgiving holidays each and every year.

How do we commemorate the settlers' suffering? We rush to the mall! Because they have cotton V-neck sweaters at unbeatable prices! We also stuff on food up the wazoo and then sit on the couch drinking Coke and watching football.

On June 6, 1944, allied forces landed in Normandy and at the cost of 4,900 US army servicemen (every source gives a different number) breached Nazis' Atlantic Wall. To remember D-Day, as well as all those who served during WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq and other wars we... run to the mall! Because they open up their doors on Sunday, at 6:00am for an insane sale. That Barbie Rose Colored Gown sure looks good.

Some two thousand years ago Jesus Christ was born, who remains one of the most remarkable individuals in the history of civilization. To celebrate Christmas... we run to the mall and browse around, eyeing a perfect gift that will land in the junk collection at the attic.

Don't get me wrong, I do love holidays. I only wish all those people who gave their lives for noble causes knew we'd use them to promote our senseless, unquenchable consumerism.

Hello Milan;

I've found your web site to be one of the most inspirational and informative ASP.NET sites on the Internet... I've just spent the past few hours reading nearly every one of your articles! I enjoy that fact that some of your articles deal with site design and some with code... seems like most developers focus on one or the other and rarely on both... well, at least it seems as though it's rare that one developer is GOOD at both ;)

I also agree with your comments on the holidays, especially Christmas. It's my favorite time of the year and has significant meaning to me, but to many it has become one more reason to go shopping :(

Sincerely,
Todd M. Taylor

Bet the local Indians don't :)

Considering that local Indians had their land stolen and they were exterminated, I guess you're right. :)
